Alliance for Maine's Future- Notes on Democrat primary

By ldutson - Posted on 05 June 2008

from Tony Payne at the Alliance for Maine's Future:

First Congressional District Democratic & Republican Primaries
It is difficult not to notice that four of the six candidates for Congress in the Democratic primary are former state legislators. Each of the four have taken leadership roles in making Maine one of the least economically successful states in the nation. According to the Maine Economic Research Institute's (MERI) ratings, none of the four ever exceeded a rating of 24 out of a possible score of 100.

These are their best MERI ratings: Chellie Pingree (14.5), Ethan Strimling (14.5), Michael Brennan (17.5) and Mark Lawrence (24). Being in the bottom quartile on economic issues that concern the private sector suggests hostility toward Maine businesses, large and small. We should not send our mistakes to Washington.

Two candidates, Adam Cote and Steve Meister, have not been part of the problem.

In the Republican primary for Congress, both Summers and Scontras have solid credentials as business people and as advocates for a strong private sector.

Please vote in one of these two Congressional primaries and urge others to do the same.

Fine to Sign Petition for Tax Repeal
Earlier this week, we challenged the accuracy of information being sent by the Maine teachers' union leadership urging their members not to sign the FED UP WITH TAXES petition. Similar communications are being sent by leaders of other membership organizations that plan to disuade voters from signing petitions at the polls.

Obviously, there is a great deal at stake. Please, make an informed decision. Signing the peition will simply give voters a chance to decide if the SNEAK-A-TAX, passed in the middle of the night and without a public hearing, is acceptable. Otherwise, we'll be telling legislators that it's OK to raise our taxes and continue to increase state spending.

Please, pass this along to your, friends, family, co-workers, vendors and customers and ask them to do the same. Thanks!
